What is a domain name?
It's a memorable (hopefully) 'address' for your web site.
Computers use a series of numbers, called "IP addresses", to find each
other. But most humans struggle to remember them. A name like
saddle-up.org.uk
- for example - is much easier.
Domain names also form
part of your "URLs" or unique resource locators. These start with
http:// (or perhaps https:// if it's a shopping site on a secure server) and
normally continue with "www" (the world
wide web). This is followed by a specific domain name - such as
equinenet.org.uk
http:// is the part of
the URL that tells the computer we are in hyper text transfer protocol
mode.
Hypertext is used to communicate page design on
the internet.
Each URL must be unique.
Sometimes there may be different sites using very similar names, with
the only thing that varies being the end 'tag' - for example: yourbusiness.com
and yourbusiness.org and yourbusiness.co.uk could all be different companies.
If you intend to stay in
business and build up a good reputation (or already have one), it makes
good business sense to register a domain name (or names) as close as possible to
your real business name. We can help you register your name at a very
economic rate.
Be very wary of 'free' hosts who offer to register
your name - it may be 'free' to start with but if you want to transfer
to another ISP in the future, you may be hit with large 'transfer
fees'. When you register your domain through Equinenet, we provide
"free parking" for the domain name until your site is
ready.
